5-Nitroimidazole drugs effective against metronidazole-resistant Trichomonas vaginalis and Giardia duodenalis.
Metronidazole (Mz)-resistant Giardia and Trichomonas were inhibited by 1 of 30 new 5-nitroimidazole drugs. Another five drugs were effective against some but not all of the Mz-resistant parasites. This study provides the incentive for the continued design of 5-nitroimidazole drugs to bypass cross-resistance among established 5-nitromidazole antiparasitic drugs.
متن کاملMetronidazole-resistant Trichomonas vaginalis.
A 36-year-old woman with symptomatic metronidazole-resistant trichomonal vaginitis for 10 years had a total of 22 courses of treatment with either metronidazole or tinidazole according to different schedules. The minimum trichomonicidal concentration of metronidazole for the strain of Trichomonas vaginalis isolated from the patient was 160 microgram/ml compared with 1.25-10 microgram/ml for oth...

To investigate the effect of drugs other than metronidazole, 3 non-pregnant women infected with Trichomonas vaginalis were treated with doxycycline, 2 x 200 mg/day for 1 week. Another 3 women were treated with praziquantel, single dose, 40 mg/kg body weight. No therapeutic effect was detected for either drug. In vitro, oxytetracycline led to death of T. vaginalis at a concentration of 15 mg in ...
متن کاملIn vitro metronidazole and tinidazole activities against metronidazole-resistant strains of Trichomonas vaginalis.
The in vitro activities of tinidazole and metronidazole against Trichomonas vaginalis isolates clinically resistant to metronidazole were compared. Minimal lethal concentrations (MLCs) of tinidazole were significantly lower than MLCs of metronidazole. Increased metronidazole resistance correlated with increased tinidazole resistance. These data support a role for tinidazole in the treatment of ...
متن کاملTreatment of infections caused by metronidazole-resistant Trichomonas vaginalis.
Infections with the sexually transmitted protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis are usually treated with metronidazole, a 5-nitroimidazole drug derived from the antibiotic azomycin. Metronidazole treatment is generally efficient in eliminating T. vaginalis infection and has a low risk of serious side effects. However, studies have shown that at least 5% of clinical cases of trichomoniasis are caused b...
